Who can be a counselor?

CITs: (Counselors in training) volunteer positions are for students currently in 7th and 8th grade.

COUNSELORS: Paid positions for students who are currently in high school or college.

How do I sign up?

Interview and Application

FIRST YEAR Counselors and CITs

Please come to Grace Lutheran to be interrogated at a short interview on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the church library, anytime between 9-11 a.m.

Please DO NOT send your application, but instead, bring the completed form to the interview. Click here to download a 2012 CIT/Counselor application for first year counselors and CITs. Internet Explorer has some bugs, so if you are having trouble downloading this application, try switching browsers. Every other browser we've tested works fine! There will be blank applications available at the interview.

If you are hired, and you are finishing grades 9 - 11, you must also apply for a Work Permit from your high school. (They will take your form, and mail the permit to CMT.) Work permit request forms will be included in your hire notification e-mail.

Work permits for hired Counselors must be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 2. (CITs do NOT need work permits.) You cannot apply for a work permit before you are hired.

RETURNING Counselors and CITs

If you have worked at CMT before, fill out the online. NO paper applications will be accepted.

You will receive a confirmation code when we receive your application. Please make sure you complete the application before midnight, Friday, March 23. The application will no longer be available after that date.

If you are hired, and you are finishing grades 9 - 11, you must also apply for a Work Permit from your high school. Work permit request forms will be included in your hire notification e-mail.

Work permits for hired Counselors must be turned in no later than Wednesday, May 2. (CITs do NOT need work permits. Counselors who are 18 years or older, or who have graduated from high school do NOT need work permits.) You cannot apply for a work permit before you are hired. (Q: What do you call a counselor without a work permit? A: A volunteer!)

You will be informed of your status, hired or not, by April 1. Contacting Kären before April will not expedite the process of wading through hundreds of applications. Please be considerate.

All PAID positions (not CITs) need to turn in a W-4 form for payroll withholding of Income Tax no later than Wednesday, May 2.

NEW hires must also complete an I-9 form, and turn it in with a photocopy of your passport, or if you do not have a passport, a copy of both your drivers license(or other photo ID) and birth certificate.

Counselors and CITs

Counselor employment forms (W4, Work Permit, I9) ARE due on Wednesday, May 2. That gives you a little over 4 weeks from your hire date to turn in your paperwork. Please do not wait until the last minute to apply for your work permit - the high school office appreciates the courtesy of a timely application. Palo Alto schools will take your application, and mail your work permit directly to CMT. We always have a waiting list for counselor positions - please keep that in mind. CITs do NOT need work permits. High school graduates and those 18 and older do NOT need work permits. The rest of you do!
